LATE NIGHT LONESOME Late night lonesome Leave the window open Open I want to hear the city life I want to see the city lights There's something there That's not in sight Oh everything's okay It's just I'm broken Open Late night lonesome Who me? I'm here with no one No one A body and its vagrant thoughts No one Oh consciousness, just not a lot Some particles, imagined loss A nothing with a sense of something Holy Wholly Lonesome And if these feelings last too long I don't know what I'll do I guess I'll get on my knees and pray for something new I don't know who I pray to It sometimes seems to help I just know I can't go on alone I want to hear the city life I want to see the city lights There's something there It's not in sight Oh everything's okay It's just I'm broken Late night Lonesome

END OF THE LATE SHOW End of the late show All of the customers clear out of the club Frank! Oh Frank! End of the late show Even the regulars clear out of the club Frank! Scram! But me, I'm just lazy I'm going to stay up half the night I don't have no plans But I can dream Can't I? End of the late show Even the singer is ready to go home Kaye! Oh Kaye! End of the late show Even the singer is ready to go home To her own home Alone, Kaye Don't be a lazy bird Put on your scarf and fix your hat We don't have no plans for you But we can dream Can't we? But me, I'm a lazy boy I'm going to stay up half the night I don't have no plans But I can dream You know what I mean Don't you?

about

These are songs from "Late Night Lonesome," a play I'm in the course of maybe never finishing. There are other songs, too, some of them quite nice, and I hope to add them to the site soon.

Some of the action takes place in a night club in the 1950's, so I channeled my inner bar fly to write it. It actually wasn't that hard. Pretty close to the surface...

There are four characters in the play, maybe five (it's ambiguous), and Frank and Kaye are two of them. The piano player is a third, and he sings End of the Late Show. And then there's the guy who sings Late Night Lonesome -- a great musician, but a little sketchy.

Nothing works out as planned, but when I Summon You Into Being With This Song is playing, it seems like anything is possible for all of the characters.

I've written more than 100 pages, which is too long, but the writing has been a revealing process. I offer these songs for your enjoyment.
